Let me get started by saying that I always loved scented candles. I could not walk by a candle section at a store without smelling each and every one of them.
I have always wanted to be my own boss and start a business from home, and now I actually had the time to think about what I want to do and what are my passions.
Then I started looking around the house, and I noticed that I have lots of scented candles.
The idea just came into my mind, if I love scented candles so much maybe everyone loves them and I should start making my own candles and start selling them to others.
Is it worth investing in a candle business in these uncertain times?
The truth is, I still do not know if it is worth it or not, but at least I am trying, I would have regretted more if I did not try.
Then I started researching what I needed to start my own candle business:
- Start-up equipment (melting pot, pouring jug, thermometer)
- Wax (paraffin wax, soy wax, coconut wax)
- Wicks (Cotton wicks, wooden wicks)
- Fragrance oils
- Containers (jars, tins)
- Postal boxes
After I found out some really disturbing facts about paraffin wax which is derived from petroleum. And when you burn it, paraffin wax releases toxic compounds into the air, some well-known carcinogens that not only are damaging the environment but our health, too.
Then I started reading the labels on every single candle that I own and guess what? Most of the ones that I bought from the shops are made using paraffin wax and containing toxic ingredients.
So, I decided to make my candles eco-friendly, vegan and CMR (Carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic chemicals) free.
Every candle is made using 100% soy wax that is biodegradable and vegan friendly and the wick is made of pure cotton and thin paper filaments crossed together for a more stable and consistent burn.
After ordering all the supplies that I needed and designed the product labels. So, I started making candles.
I would not say it was hard, but nothing it’s easy at the beginning. I just wanted everything to be perfect.
So that is how I lunched Scents of Happiness.
Happiness means different things for different people, for me, it means scented candles.
It’s not much, but it is something, it’s nice to know that someone wants something made by your own 2 hands.
And also, after this experience, I will never go back to store-bought candles. Even my partner noticed a difference, and this does not happen very often.
So, that is my story, if you have any question please leave them in the comments below.
